The Garron Tower sank in 1914 as the Planier in the South of France, not near Beachy Head.
Upon reading the newspaper articles that mention Bill Maynard as missing from Mount Stewart and Garron Tower, while both ships' crews were rescued by the Bessemer, one realizes that something has gone awry in the reporting. The Shields Daily Gazette, dated Monday, 22 December 1890, even reports on the same page about the 'Two separate vessels.'
There was confusion with Mount Stewart as both were owned by the Marquis of Londonderry. |
Should be the Mount Stewart |
